ASREN Founders Meeting
Over 90 delegates from 12 Arab countries, including most EUMEDCONNECT2 project partners, the EC Ambassador, senior EC and ministerial officals as well as representatives of the Arab and European NREN and user communities gathered on 8 December 2010 at the Arab League Headquarters in Cairo for the Arab States Research and Education Network (ASREN) Founders Meeting. The event marked the formation of the ASREN organisation which is to be registered as a non-profit organisation in Germany in early 2011. The Secretary of the League of Arab States, H.E. Amr Moussa, presented in the opening session and expressed his strong support for ASREN and agreed to act as its Honorary President.
Plans for setting up the ASREN organisation are being progressed, and NREN representatives of Jordan, Morocco and the Emirates agreed to serve on the initial board which is chaired by H.E. Talal Abu-Ghazaleh, Chair of UN GAID.
During the day, a series of speeches and presentations provided the perspectives of key stakeholders, users and NRENs on the opportunities that ASREN provides the Arab world for 21st century co-operative research and education. Pending the formal registration of ASREN, a symbolic Statement of Support was signed during the day, including by the participating EUMEDCONNECT2 partners (please click here to view the document).
The event generated strong media coverage. Please view the press release and press clippings
