DANTE FAQs

What is DANTE?

Established in 1993, DANTE is a non-profit organisation whose primary mission is to design and implement pan continental research and education networks on behalf of European National Research and Education Network organisations (NRENs). Owned by 15 European NRENs and working in co-operation with the European Union, DANTE has a proven track record in project management and network delivery, supported by extensive commercial knowledge of the market place combined with a thorough technical understanding. DANTE stands for Delivery of Advanced Network Technology to Europe.

How many staff work for DANTE?

The company currently has 35 permanent staff, many of whom are multi-lingual, representing 14 nationalities from around the world.  As a result, its international workforce is able to make an efficient contribution to the collaborative networking projects it participates in across the world.

In which regions does DANTE operate?

DANTE is currently managing initiatives focused on Europe, the Mediterranean/North African, Latin American and Asia Pacific regions through the GÉANT2, EUMEDCONNECT2, ALICE and TEIN2/3 projects respectively.

What research does DANTE undertake together with the European NRENs?

DANTE and the NRENs are committed to a comprehensive programme of research that benefits research networking communities and commercial marketplaces.  In fact, many of today’s consumer communication technologies were developed via research networks that DANTE is actively involved with.

Are there any commercial applications for the work DANTE is currently undertaking?

Many of today’s consumer communications technologies were developed via research networks DANTE manages. DANTE’s work in building GÉANT2 –the first hybrid network deployed on an international scale, demonstrates new service possibilities for commercial suppliers. In addition, we are constantly developing new research technologies, deploying multi-domain monitoring tools, security measures, roaming facilities and “bandwidth on-demand” capacities.

Why does DANTE focus primarily on research and education networks?

Research networks have increasingly become a global activity with research organisations demanding the resources and capabilities to take advantage of geographically dispersed expertise.  As a result, the demand for capacity and data throughput have increased incrementally placing additional pressures on the level of network performance required.  Often surpassing current telecom networks, research communities require specifically enhanced network capabilities of the level delivered by GÉANT2.
