About EUMEDCONNECT2:

EUMEDCONNECT2 provides a dedicated high-capacity data-communications network for the research and education community across the southern EUMEDCONNECT2 logo  Mediterranean, enabling them to engage in innovative joint projects. Offering a direct link to GÉANT2, the pan-European multi-gigabit data network, EUMEDCONNECT2 allows approximately 2 million users in 700 institutions across North Africa and the Middle East to collaborate with their peers at more than 3000 research and education establishments in Europe. Via GÉANT2’s connections to other world regions, such as North America, Latin America and Asia-Pacific, Mediterranean researchers can now operate on a truly global scale.

Building on the success of its predecessor network, EUMEDCONNECT2 directly connects 7 southern and eastern Mediterranean partner countries: Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Morocco, Palestine, Syria and Tunisia.

The European Commission is contributing €4m (approx. 50% of the costs) from its regional European Neighbourhood and Partnership Instrument (ENPI South) budget towards EUMEDCONNECT2, with the remaining funds being provided by the Mediterranean partners. The project will run until 2010.
